Two of Dolly Parton’s best-known films are returning to the big screen as theaters honor the late country music icon.
The special screenings began August 28 at about 200 AMC locations nationwide, with additional showings scheduled at Regal Cinemas in Tennessee and select Harkins Theatres on August 29 and 30. The screenings follow Parton’s death on August 25 at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer.
Steel Magnolias, released in 1989, centers on a close group of women in a small Louisiana town. Parton plays beauty salon owner Truvy Jones alongside Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis.
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas arrived in 1982 and stars Parton opposite Burt Reynolds. The musical comedy features Parton as a Texas brothel owner, while Reynolds plays the local sheriff and her romantic partner.
The limited theatrical return gives audiences another opportunity to revisit Parton’s film work alongside the music career that made her an international star.
