Virginia’s victorious incumbent Senator had a call to action for his Republican counterparts during his post-midterm speech last night.
Virginia’s incumbent for the senatorial seat in the 2026 midterm elections – Democratic Senator Mark Warner – has secured his spot in Congress for another six years, defeating his Republican challenger, Bert Mizusawa, with a sixty-percent majority vote.
During his victory speech, Warner criticized the Trump administration for the hardships he says it has caused Virginians, “And I’ve seen Virginian families working so hard and playing by the rules and still falling behind. While tariffs are just nothing but a tax and a reckless war in Iran that didn’t need to happen make their life harder.”
Warner also reflected on the lessons he learned from his predecessor, Republican Senator John Warner, whom he lost his first Senatorial campaign to in 1996. He urged his Republican counterparts to return to the bipartisan, people-first mentality that he says was characteristic of those early days of his political career, “John Warner taught me a lot. He taught me that we could disagree, but if we still put our country first, we could find common ground. That kind of politics, and that love for our country and our commonwealth, God knows we need more of that in our country today.”
Warner says this will be his final term, and that he intends to use it to support bipartisan legislation targeting the affordability crisis, AI technology regulation, and universal healthcare.
