Roanoke’s downtown meadery has opened a speakeasy. As WFIR’s Denise Allen Membreno reports Atheling Meadworks has created an intimate cocktail lounge.
Atheling is known for its mead, but owner Steve Ausband also distills on site small-batch Gin and Vodka. The new speakeasy located in the rear of the Meadery, puts a spotlight on both in the handcrafted cocktails.
“It’s just sort of a little hidden back in there to get in and do the tastings with the vodka and the gin that we make there. So it’s a pretty cool vibe back there actually. It took us a while to get it built out and permitted and all that, but now we’re up and running with it.”
Ausband says the Speakeasy is also available for private parties. It has different hours than the Meadery with hours on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m. Denise Allen Membreno WFIR News.

There’s a new venue in downtown Roanoke. It’s located inside Atheling Meadworks. WFIR’s Denise Allen Membreno has more on the speakeasy.
Imagine stepping back in time…Atheling Meadworks owner Steve Ausband says the new speakeasy in the back of their downtown location has a cool 1920s vibe. He says they are planning period events focusing on the 1920s as well as live music. Ausband hopes the space brings people together.
“I’d like everybody to be able to have a good time enjoying some unique handcrafted distilled on-site spirits and be very comfortable hanging out, visiting for a while, spending some time enjoying the space and visiting with each other.”
Atheling is best known for creating mead, one of the world’s oldest alcoholic beverages, made by fermenting honey with water. But the Speakeasy will feature Ausband’s small batch gin and vodka which he distills in the speakeasy. Denise Allen Membreno WFIR News.
